新潟県上越市春日山にある上杉謙信ゆかりの地「春日神社」

春日山の名の由来は、
奈良の春日社を山上に勧請したことに由来します。

社伝では、天徳2年(958)と伝えられており、
春日山城の築城の時、ここに遷座して
鬼門（北東）を守護したといわれています。

平氏の流れをくむ長尾景虎（謙信）は、
藤原氏の流れをくむ上杉氏を相続して、
名実ともに越後の大守となりますが、
春日社は藤原氏の氏神に他なりません。

春日山城は
非常時の防衛施設だけではなく、
謙信の代に居城となり
政治の拠点として特異な変遷をたどります。

謙信は、
氏神である春日明神の加護を受けながら、
戦国の世に覇を唱えたのです。

This mountain called Kasugayama because the deity of the Kasuga Shrine in Nara was invocated here. According to tradition, the shrine was transferred here when Kasugayama Castle was built in 958 AD. It is said to have guarded the Kimon ( northeast) Gate. Nagao Kagetora (Kenshin) , a descendant of he Taira clan, succeeded to the Uesugi family (descended frpm the Fujiwaras) and becme the overload of Echigo in both name and reality. But the Kasuga Shrine remained under the tutelary guardianship of the Fujiwaras.

Kasugayama Castle became a resident castle in the days of Kenshin, as well as a defensive facility in times of emergency. Thus it went through all the vicissitudes peculiar to a center of goverment. Kenshin, enjoying the protection of the tutelary deity Kasuga Mojin, rules superme in the era of the Warring States ( late15th to mid 16th centuries).
